Manjunath,22,was diagnosed with a complex congenital heart disease,tricuspid atresia,in 2004.He then underwent a procedure called B D Glenn Shunt at Narayana Hrudayalaya.However,he developed subarachnoid haemorrhage and cerebral stroke last year,due to which there was left-sided weakness in his limbs.
An angiogram at Narayana Institute of Neuroscience showed Manjunath had a large aneurysm in a major artery supplying blood to the brain,the internal carotid artery.Unlike the common coiling procedure,he needed a sophisticated and technically-challenging one called stent-assisted coiling.
The procedure was done using catheters placed through a pinhole from an artery in the leg to the one of the brain.The post-procedure angiogram showed successful obliteration of the aneurysm.Manjunath was able to have food later in the day and able to walk on his own the next day.
A team led by Dr Vikram Huded conducted the procedure.According to doctors,this is one of the first such cases in India.
